At the beginning of the sixties, two compositions marked an important new period in recent music history. With Atmosphères (1960) by the Hungarian composer György Ligeti and Threnody by the Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, we encounter two masterpieces that employ the compositional technique with large-scale clusters in very different ways.

In the mid-fifties, the American composer John Cage stirred up the New Music scene, which had been dominated by the strict-serial Darmstadt School in the years before. Hardly anyone could escape his influence. Aleatoric music was born and had a great impact on the following generations.

After a long summer break, our course on New Music will begin again on Friday, September 30. In the eighth module (The Zero Hour) we will deal with serial music in the period 1949-1957.

Works by Messiaen, Stockhausen (piano pieces), Boulez (Le marteau san maître) and Luigi Nono (Il canto sospeso) will be heard. As always, explained on the grand piano and with historical film and sound examples.

Suzanna has been singing about love for a long time. Until now it was a one-sided story. Until she found her current partner. When she found out that he can also sing, she got him on stage. Together they make a program in which the joy, but also the suffering that love brings with it is expressed in full beauty, but also with humor. Suzanna plays the guitar and sings with Mark de Fockert.

The composer and architect Iannis Xenakis would have turned one hundred years old on 29.5.2022. Throughout his life, the performances of his highly complex orchestral works, such as Metastasis, have caused a sensation. The great importance of the Messiaen pupil for the music of the twentieth century is undisputed, as is his influence on subsequent generations. As a long-time assistant to the architect Le Corbusier, he also supervised important building projects worldwide. Highly worth seeing and recommending as a first approach to Xenakis' music is the excellent documentary Xenakis Revolution. Baumeister des Klangs in the Arte Mediathek.

Speaking on today's edition of Course in New Music is musicologist, pianist and Xenakis compatriot, Dr. Pavlos Antoniadis, who is a close associate of the Paris Ircam and the Xenakis Foundations.
