Lecturer: Andreas F. Staffel
In the seventh part of our series "Course in New Music" we deal with the important composer Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992).
In addition to the Préludes from the early 1930s, we will hear the early serial piano piece Modes de Valeure et d'intensitée (1949), which particularly influenced the work of Messiaen's students Karl-Heinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez. We discover the gifted ornithologist Messiaen in his Catalogue des oiseaux (1958) and listen to the sound of the pond warbler.
Finally, we hear excerpts from the monumental Turangalîla Symphony (1848) and experience the synesthete Messiaen. As always, explained on the grand piano and with historical sound examples!
